“The Kraken” by Noa James ft./Phantom Thrett, prod. KillaHrtz

For those of you who don’t know what a kraken is, it’s the “legendary sea monster of
enormous size” that turned out to be just a squid, albeit bigger than the rest. The kraken was
misunderstood for centuries—even thought to be a myth—but it actually exists, and it has come
to symbolize fear of the unknown. On Christmas Eve in 2015, some Toyama Bay fishermen
spotted a kraken! Perhaps that twelve-foot squid inspired Noa James’ Christmas-themed cover
art.

“I’m loved in different ways. Some give me knowledge, some give me praise. Some gimme
light, some gimme shade. Some protect me with they wicked ways” -Noa James
On “The Kraken” track, Noa James reminds us that his choice to be light is not without
understanding that all moves made toward him are not made in his best interest. He can see
ya’ll—but it really don’t matter, because attempts to shade h;is path are futile: he moves
elegantly amongst the shadows too.
“Talk like me—unlikely. Filled with violence, but move politely. A paradox times God’s
timing...” -Noa James

The second verse on “The Kraken”, produced by KillaHrtz, comes from James’ long-time
friend and collaborator Phantom Thrett. The artist is a singer, producer, emcee, and we don’t
really know what else is up his sleeve—he’s really a phantom threat!
After Noa’s direct, in the pocket flow, Thrett swirls a rhythm around the implied beat that
makes his verse feel whimsical. If Noa’s verse is about his perspectives surrounding outside
challenges, Phantom’s capricious follow-up is both directed toward, and mimicking our internal
conflicts and conversations.

“...those numbers won’t hold you accountable, My G. Who do you believe yourself to be?
Put them gloves on and you gon’ see.” -Phantom Thrett
“The Kraken” is only two minutes and forty-five seconds long, but it gave us what we need!!
We have bars to tickle our cognitive fancy, and a posse hook we can’t stop chanting:
“This what happens when you release the kraken: I pop up and get it crackin’! I pop up and
get it crackin’! I pop up and get it crackin’!”
